What Does Car Insurance for Ireland Expats Cover?
Choose the Policy You Need:
- Third Party Fire & Theft Cover: includes protection for Third Party damages in respect of death or bodily injury or property damage as a result of an accident. This car insurance option in Ireland also includes cover for fire and theft claims relating to your vehicle.
- Fully Comprehensive Cover: includes all of the above with additional collision damage cover for your own vehicle.
Driving in European Union Countries
Covers you to drive in any country which is a member of the European Union, subject to max number of days, depending on your policy. You must advise us of trip before departure.
Roadside Assistance / Breakdown
- Roadside and doorstep assistance
- 1 hour free labour if the vehicle can be repaired at the breakdown site
- Towing of the vehicle to the nearest competent repairer
Drivers Medical Expenses
Covers medical expenses up to certain limit per person. Please refer to your policy booklet for full details. Only available on comprehensive level of cover.
Windscreen Cover
- Covered for the cost of repairing or replacing damaged or broken glass in the windscreen or windows.
- Automatically included on comprehensive level of cover and is available as an optional extra on Third Party Fire & Theft policies.
Personal Accident Benefits
Applies for the policyholder and any other authorised driver permitted to drive the insured vehicle, or any authorised passenger in the insured vehicle whilst the policyholder or the authorised driver is driving. Only available on Fully Comprehensive level of cover.
- Accidental death, loss of limb, loss of sight, hospitalisation, bone fracture
Poor Driving History Considered
Will consider quoting for customers with up to two fault or non-fault claims, or one fire or theft claim in the last two years.
No Claims Bonus
As long as no claim is made under this policy during any annual period of insurance, you will receive a discount when you renew your insurance.
New for Old Cover
If your car is brand new and you have an accident within its first year of registration, the vehicle is replaced with a brand-new car – subject to conditions. Only available on Fully Comprehensive level of cover.
Lock Replacement
Cover towards cost of replacing door, boot, ignition/steering locks, subject to limits and excess/deductible.
Towing a Trailer or Caravan
Covers liability to Third Parties whilst towing. Does not include cover for the trailer or a caravan.
Driving Other Cars Benefit
Covers the policyholder for liability to other people while driving any other private motor car which you do not own or have not hired. Subject to conditions – please refer to your policy booklet for full details. Only available on certain Fully Comprehensive policies.

Can I get car insurance in Ireland with an International Driving Licence?
Yes, you can get car insurance in Ireland using your International Driving Licence. However, if your Driving Licence is from outside of the European Union, you are required to exchange your licence for its Irish equivalent after 1 year.

Which Foreign Country Driver Licenses are Accepted?
Any International Licence is acceptable if, at inception, the International Licence holder has been resident in ROI for less than 12 months. The only provisional licence accepted is Ireland. If you hold a foreign driving licence that was issued outside the EU, you are required to exchange or apply for an Irish driving licence upon becoming a resident in Ireland.
